Week 2--Birthday Buddies

Monday, Jan. 6th

Tuesday, Jan. 7th
Full house for Taco Tuesday.

Wednesday, Jan. 8th
Only pic of the day...was letting C4&K know that I really like my new UConn fleece.
Thursday, Jan. 9th
First homeschool co-op meeting of the semester.

Friday, Jan. 10th
Maddy kept Ezra home for the day, so we FT'd to say hi and let her know we missed out on our Friday with her.

Impromptu teeth-brushing party!  We were all guilty of smothering Trevor a bit as he packed up and got on the road back to school.
Harley and Spiderman joined me at Rocco's hockey game.

Saturday, Jan. 11th
Colombo celebrated the 18th anniversary of his 30th birthday, and Harlem turned 3!  The day was filled with 3 hockey games and a quick lunch with Rocco and Renna because that's what we could squeeze in.  But Happy Birthday, Bobo texts are the best!
Some baby pix of C3 courtesy of Karen.
C2 was right at his 26th birthday here- same age as C4 is now!  Crazy!
Rocco and I stopped in at Harlem's party for an hour on the way to his game.  Harley ripped open his gift the moment we walked through the door, so he and Rocco sat in his room putting it together while I did my best to make small talk in a very tense next room over.
Rocco's one of his favorite people and Harlem is one of our favorites, so I'm glad it worked for us to be there for a bit.  He's been a part of the family since he was 3 months old and I think he enjoyed having Rocco on his turf.
His mom worked hard to give him a special day, and continues to work her tail off to do her best for her son.

Sunday, Jan. 12th
I woke up with a sore throat and didn't want to share with anyone, so I opted to watch online.  It was soooooooooo good to see Bishop in the pulpit!  Fills my heart!
Fit check from Ezra!  On point, girl!
After her game, Colombo and Renna ran up to Maddy and Mason's annual (but delayed) Singing Christmas Tree production.  They delayed it in anticipation of the reopening of their sanctuary after a nearly two-year major renovation.  This day, they moved the services back into their beautiful new space along with a completely rethought atrium and cafe.  I've only seen it happening in stages, but by all accounts, the finished product is absolutely stunning!

Week 1--Welcome, 2025!

Wednesday, Jan. 1st

The fresh flip of the calendar into a new year- a clean slate filled with hope and newness.  And the weight and shadow of all God has called us to carry into the New Year.  For so many things, it is a clean slate, an opportunity for resolutions and start-overs and try-harders.  But I also know, that it's just as much a meaningless day.  A call to continue in the mundane, being faithful with what we've been assigned.  Sometimes the hard follows us across the calendar days.  It might not be shiny and new and exciting, but the responsibility isn't any less and we are still called to be diligent and continue our work as unto the Lord.  It's not a chance to trade crosses or turn ours in, rather another opportunity to obediently pick it up and continue carrying this year.

Colombo and Rocco had to do his practice, but Trevor and Renna kept the tradition of meeting up with friends for skating!  This wasn't the whole group, but it was a good chunk- missing Jon, Annie, and girls along with some other friends.

I hit the grocery store early in the morning and happily spent the majority day in the kitchen making a big meal for the fam so we could do our annual goal-setting evening.  It makes me happy to know that the kids look forward to it and I can make it extra fun and fancy with cloth napkins, chargers, sparkling cider, and a printed menu.

After dinner we worked on goals- reviewing last year's and grading ourselves on how we did and setting news ones for the year to come.  It's a beautiful peek into a corner of my big kids' lives.  Listening to their financial goals, housing goals, and workplace goals makes me feel so old!  And just for fun, to kick things off, last year we started by reading "ten years ago".  So for this year to start, we all read our 2014 goals before reading 2024.  It makes for a very hilarious dialogue.  I now have them dating back to 2010!

Thursday, Jan. 2nd

Colombo and Jon have been working out in the fitness center attached to the rink while the girls are on the ice for practice.  While Trevor was home, he joined them to workout but also he was missing the pool, so he took advantage and swam whenever he was there.

Friday, Jan. 3rd

Trevor got to be a guest at TBQ and shared a devotional from his heart.  He's built relationships with all those kids and I tried to edify him that he was in a position of influence and that his words and message held so much weight.
Dinner with these guys!  So fun getting time with them.  It's quite special to be such good friends with our siblings.

Saturday, Jan. 4th
These girls shot some pucks in the shooting room during Rocco's game.

Sunday, Jan. 5th

We did church and then I took the boys to Cosmic.  They were fun and chatty and present.  When I said I wanted a picture, Trevor sighed, "Mrs. Mitchell already took one of us at church!"
Once home from brunch, the boys agreed with me that the house smelled like "something".  I thought it was more like gas / chemical.  My eyes were even burning a bit.  Once Colombo got home, he felt like it smelled more electrical, like hot wires.  After doing my best to just ignore the problem and hope that it spontaneously resolved, I realized it probably needed attention.  Colombo wanted to call an electrician (on a Sunday??), but he also left for a hockey game in Boston.  With just me and Rocco at home, I proceeded how I best saw fit.  I called the non-emergency line to see if the fire department could at least rule out any immediate concerns.

The dispatcher told me to get everyone out of the house.  Rocco and I stood shivering in the driveway with the dog on a leash, not knowing how long it would take.  Within minutes, Rocco's worst fears were realized when we could hear sirens in the distance.  Exactly what I was trying to avoid.  As numerous vehicles filled the circle and 6-8 very eager firemen with full gear marched up the driveway on a mission,  horrified, Rocco said, "Mom!  Six guys with actual axes because you smelled something?!?!?"

They were actually quite kind, understanding, and helpful.  They smelled the same thing I did.  They had all sorts of equipment to reasonably and confidently rule out any hazardous threats and deem the house a safe environment.  So that was enough for me to default back to my "wait it out".
It was a mini reunion at the girls' game.  The boys former (and favorite!) nanny and family friend, Carina, was there.  Thirty years later, she still loves the family and keeps up with what's going on with everyone.

Goodbye to the tree!  It was a nice shape, nice color, and never dropped a needle.  It's con was that the branches were so weak, it could only hold the lightest of bulbs.

Week 52, part 2--Montreal

Friday, Dec. 27th

Time for our 5th Annual DiSalvaCour Trip.  This year, we decided on Montreal, Canada.  The goals: not an excessively long car ride, cross the border and use new passports, try a new spot, mostly hang in the hotel for games, explore a little....and Montreal seemed to check those boxes.  It was a bonus that the French-speaking region felt very far from home.

The trip has gotten increasingly harder to carve out.  The very first one came to be in 2020 (Covid times) when the kids had NOTHING going on the week between Christmas and New Year's.  Also, C4 really wanted to propose to Kelly.  Also, travel was still reserved for the 'brave' so options were unlimited and very affordable.  We thought, let's head south at least to hoodie weather.  That was the year C4 and Kelly got engaged on Virginia Beach.

But now, things have returned to normal.  There's work and practices and games.  C4 and Kelly and Maddy, Mason, and Ezra were not with us, but the rest of us forged ahead with the tradition.

Oddly enough, Colombo and I were alone for the first leg.

Rocco was on Day 2 in Portland, ME so instead of caravanning with the rest of the crew, Colombo and I went to Maine to see his game and then grab him to take him with us to Montreal.  We also got to see several cousins at the game!  We had a fun afternoon chatting and catching up.  So sweet of them to make the effort!

The rest of the gang caravanned in two cars and Colombo, Rocco, and I arrived around 10p.

Our hotel was precious!  I took a chance on a non-chain.  It was very boutique-y, two floors of the Institute for Tourism, and it was mostly run by the very eager tourism students.  Our hang-out spot was a large cafe and game-room.  Students were away for the holiday, so we had the place to ourselves.  There were never less than two security guards at the stand.  The free breakfast was a sit-down restaurant feel with student servers and amazing food.  It was a perfect location attached to the metro station.

It wasn't perfect, for instance the second queen bed was a murphy bed and felt more like a flimsy pull-out than an actual second bed.  We also felt the staffs eyes on us the whole time.  They were particular about where we were and how many of us there were.  There were also hidden costs that surprised us at check-in like charging extra for every person in the room, but I negotiated at check-out and in the end, all parties were happy.  It all worked out so nicely, especially our time together, and the memories made.

Saturday, Dec. 28th
The Metro was very safe and easy and so fun for the kids.
This was the cold day, but we were determined to get out and explore beginning with Notre Dame Basilica.  It was amazing, ornate, fascinating, and a warm place to hang for a bit.

Then we walked over the Christmas Market, which was sadly underwhelming.  It was festive with live music and food vendors and fire pits, but just so much smaller than what we'd imagined.  And it was cold!

Lisa and I ducked out to hit the coffee shop across the street to warm up a bit before taking an Uber back, saving Lisa an extra long walk back to the Metro.
Soon, the rest of the gang joined us!

We opted to do an easy pizza night after being out all day.  The staff asked us to move to the closed and empty bar.  ??

Sunday, Dec. 29th
Free breakfast with tablecloths and juice in champagne flutes!  These two...

We ventured down to Old Port.  We ducked in and out of some shops, threw snow at the frozen river, admired all the elaborate store fronts decorated for Christmas.  It felt very old, very European.

SOOOO FOGGY!
Snow skeet...The larget would be launched and then everyone tried to hit it with their snowball.

Lisa, Renna, and I headed back to the hotel where we watched church online.  The rest of gang grabbed lunch and then explored a museum.

Then games, puzzle, pool, and dinner at a Greek restaurant with an amazing waiter.

Back at home, Mason was asked to baptize Ben before we went back to school.  They used a mutual friends' lake house.  The teenage boys who live there selflessly and sweetly prepared the perfect spot.

Monday, Dec. 30th
This day we went to an indoor farmer's market that Jack found.  Good local fare and fantastic people-watching!

Then back to the game room before hitting up a Mexican restaurant for dinner.

Tuesday, Dec. 31st
We promised all the kids we'd be back home in plenty of time for them to make evening plans, so we were on the road by 9.  Ish.

I think the general consensus was in the moment, the kids were so happy to be together and satisfied, but also mildly underwhelmed by the trip.  However, Lisa and I also think that down the road they will gain a fuller appreciation of where we were and what we did.  It was a WIN, but probably not a re-do.

More pictures out-of-order since we had a shared album that multiple people added to.

We had an easy, uneventful ride home in an our 3-car caravan.  Once home, we hustled to unload and prepare the house for Trevor to host a gang for NYE.  I ran to the store and threw dinner together for the crew.

Colombo and I stopped by Jon and Annie's for an hour and then met C4 and Kelly back at the house to hang by the fire.
We poured sparkling bubbly for the basement kids and then huddled in the office to watch the ball drop.
Slowly the house started emptying as kids got picked up.  With the leftover crew, we played a round of Empire.
