Week 20--All Things May

Monday, May 15th

We did Mother's Day with my Mom at the sweetest little breakfast spot in the middle of Nowhere, Northeast CT.  Zip code: among the rollings hills and farmland.  It's a precious place with amazing food and well-cared for house plants.  It's exactly halfway between my home and Tim's home, and just 10 minutes from where my mom lives.  So...it's "our spot" where we love to meet to celebrate.

Mother's Day hike with Mom, just 8 short years ago...when I used to have kids small enough to carry.
Now even the "little" kids are big enough to take on the task of setting up the trampoline.  Some parental involvement ended up being necessary, but aside from a little squabbling in the beginning (I think to mostly sort out dominance and in-charge-ness), they joined forces, muscle, and brain and achieved!
Renna and I went to cheer on Gianna at her track meet.  She's incredibly fast and continues to break her PR's.  Her current 800m (1/2 mile) is 2:32! (7th grade!)
Not sure who actually took the picture.  But it was shared in the family group chat, zoomed WAY in, jokes made, and the one who laughed the most- Trevor!  He's a good sport!

Tuesday, May 16th

Progress on the trampoline- done enough for a test jump.

Taco Tuesday at the house...and all the shenanigans.
Inspired by the fact that Trevor can do a fingertip pull-up on any door frame.

Wednesday, May 17th

Colombo, Renna, and I made yet another trip to Home Depot to sort out decisions for the basement remodel.  C and R wanted Blizzards on the way home.  The sunset was captured by Renna.  It's always a beautiful spot to see it, minus the towering power lines.

Thursday, May 18th

No picture.  I was busting to get Rocco's birthday book done...as well as other things.

Friday, May 19th

Walkin' with Lisa.

Harlem's first time on the (completed) trampoline.  He LOVES it!

Snuck a picture of some of Trevor's artwork he was trying to hurry and get turned in by the end of the day deadline.
The fam joined others to celebrate Jack's senior night at his baseball game.  He pitched, his team won, and he hit a triple his last at-bat.  He had quite the fan section- a testament to the people person he is!  He had family, grandparents, girlfriend, friends, youth leaders, and three pastors there.  He is well-loved and well-networked!  He pours his whole self into others and serving, so it made perfect sense to see that reciprocated.

Saturday, May 20th

We attended a beautiful wedding!  It's so strange that our peers are all marrying off their children!  We've known the bride, Sarah, since she was born and her parents- Tim and Kerry- have been loyal friends and instrumental to our involvement and community at church.  Maddy, Kelly, and Sarah grew up together with many sleepovers, birthday parties, and even vacations through the years.  It was an honor to see her marry the man of her dreams (and a dream of a guy!), Anthony.

Kelly gave an amazing toast.

Meanwhile, Ninny and Papa paid their dues and covered Renna's 2nd round Cup game in the pouring rain!  They won, so we are onto round 3!

Jonathan threw together a "small" get-together very last minute for Andrea's birthday.  It grew a bit bigger than he had expected but they know soooo many people!  It was a fun group of hockey fams, soccer fams, and other friends.  Us 4 hockey moms got the memo!

Jonathan requested a cookie cake...my first time trying one.  It was a hit and didn't last long!

Sunday, May 21st

We played the toughest game of the year to date.  Our first non-win in two years...but still not a loss!  We tied 1-1.  They were also the biggest team!  Wow!  Big difference between 11 year olds and 12 years olds sometimes.

I love this shot because this is sooooo Renna on the field.  She just plays through people, sacrifices her body, and leaves it all out on the field every game!

Lisa and Aiden came to support...that's the reason for the great pictures ;)

That night, we gathered at Mason's pick (Mexicali) for our family celebration of Mason and Rocco- our two May birthday boys.
The staff brought dessert and sang, and then our crew rolled right into the Outback birthday song.

Juliet was missing as she was in Texas for two weeks and Kelly was missing because she and her mom went to the long-awaited, much-anticipated Taylor Swift concert.  For them, it was a dream come true and a core memory made.

Week 19--Mother's Day

Monday, May 8th

My Uncle Larry passed away out in Oregon.  He was my dad's sister's husband of nearly 60 years.  We didn't see him much growing up but they always left an impression on me.  Uncle Larry had polio when he was 8, so he lived his life bent over and twisted, but it never slowed him down.  He always wore a smile, had a genius mind, and raised five kids.  Aunt Wilma always struck me as brights, wise, gentle, and so very nurturing, especially as she selflessly cared for Uncle Larry as he slowly declined over the last 20 years.  Theirs was true love and it was always evident.  I guess that's what impressed upon me.  Dad and Christina road-tripped coast to coast to be at the funeral.  He and his five living siblings sang at the service.

Flashback!
So many playoff games.

Tuesday, May 9th

We grabbed Harlem for an overnighter.

We made Mommy a special surprise for Mother's Day.

Wednesday, May 10th

Thursday, May 11th

Lisa sent this flashback...Gramma's cottage on Coventry Lake, 2008.

I tried to get a picture to frame for his mom for Mother's Day.  He cooperated for about zero seconds.

Friday, May 12th

Sat on my friend's back deck, trying to listen and be present and journey alongside.
Maddy's dance company- Open Sky, Connecticut- held their annual Spring Swing fundraiser.  It was a dinner banquet with a silent auction, a 'show'- five numbers by the dancers, and a ballroom dance lesson for all the guests.

Notable:
It had been quite some time since we saw Maddy perform.
She was as stunning as ever!
Watching my baby dance with her baby was overwhelming and I cried through every dance.
Her director is amazing!
Ballroom was fun!  We learned the merengue, swing, and fox trot.
Such a treat to be with the Rambaroses for the evening.

Saturday, May 13th
Lisa and I did one of our happiest traditions- our annual run to the farmer's market for our annuals.
The back of the truck:

We scooted to Renna's first round of State Cup for Manchester- they won.  Then I went and grabbed Harlem before her CFC game.  Honestly, I'm not sure how much I even touched him after pickup.  Between my kids and the nieces and all their friends, the boy got plenty of attention!

We did pizza and pool at Jon and Annie's to celebrate Ninny's Mother's Day.

Sunday, May 14th
Mother's Day.  We were up and out by 7:15, heading to Renna's 9a game over an hour away.  The Dads were thoughtful and put up a "Mom-osa" bar and served the moms on both teams.  It was a big hit!
All day I got compliments on my "Go Ask Your Dad" t-shirt, perfect for the day!
Moms and daughters.

We bounced between Renna's two games and half of Gabby's, thoroughly enjoying the amazing whether that somehow seems to elude us most Mother's Days.

Moms and daughters.
Once back at the house, the Bigs came over and we enjoyed an amazing evening and meal with just the 10 of us.

We have now entered the season where 'people bring something'.  Maddy brought the salad and Kelly brought her homemade dessert.
I was so touched by all of the love and effort that went into the day, but mostly the gift was just all being together.  The kids were all so thoughtful and kind and generous with their words in their letters to me.  I think we as moms spend so much time just sure that we are getting so many things wrong.  From infancy to infinity, we can second guess ourselves, beat ourselves up, and convince ourselves that we are just doing it wrong, wrong, wrong.  It's a gift to be at the point that even though I still do all of those things (especially in new seasons of parenting), the kids' letters remind me that along the way, I managed to get a few things right.

We marveled at this current height difference.
