Family in Town

Colombo's brother, Jonathan, had a couple days off, so he and Andrea and Gabriella came for a little one-night visit. They are always so easy and fun to hang with. Gabby is getting so big, so fast. She now has her two bottom teeth, is working at sitting on her own, and is enjoying experimenting with cereal and veggies. She is still just a sweet little angel! The family comes as a package deal and their package includes a puggle named Stewie. He and Gunner did very well together and besides 3 dinner rolls and 6 raw eggs from the countertop, he behaved quite well.

We love having room in our new house for overnight guests. You guys are welcome any time...even Stewie.

Happy Birthday, C2!

All 3 Colombo's celebrate their birthday in January! It's been a busy week! To celebrate, Karen had us over for dinner and cake. She was busy through the day, so my father-in-law willingly did her grocery store run for her, including purchasing his own cake. When we went to put the candles in and sing, this is what we found:

From there, we went to see Jonathan's hockey game. Since it was local, we had a group of family and friends join us.
My two sisters, Lisa and Bethany
Juliet opened her present since she was turning 8 the next day!

After the game we went down to where Jonathan was to say 'hi'. TJ got his shirt signed just like all the big kids.Other favorite pictures from the evening:

New York City, take three

My 3rd trip in 3 months...I'm on a roll!!! Colombo's birthday was on the 11th and our good friend and neighbor, Bob's was the 19th, so we conceived a plan for the 4 of us to go to New York City to see "Wicked" at a Wednesday matinee.
Lovin' a day in the City

Bob & Jules

It was just as good the 2nd time. Everyone loved the show! Then we went to Carmine's for dinner....simply amazing!
We shared family style salad, penne ala vodka, chicken parmesan, tirimisu, and a chocolate decadence type thing. It was all so very good!!!

None of it would have been possible without my friend Laurie graciously taking the kids for the day and at the last minute, overnight. She was so sweet to add my 4 to her 4 plus her day care guy. Although mine brought school to do, she still did crafts with them, made dinner, accomplished no potty accidents, and got the boys to hockey practice. Mid-day she texted me this picture to let me know all was well. She is simply amazing. Thank you so much!!!

Good Manners

The nice thing about having older siblings, is the little guys mirror so many behaviors (hopefully good ones), so as long as you taught the 1st one, the others learn by duplication. Trevor's been very polite lately. He says "doo doo" for thank you in a chipper little voice. And if I thank him, he says, "Ooo belkum". He gets praised for being so nice, so he's been playing it up a little, but I'm just happy to hear please and thank you from my 2 year old.

Happy Birthday, C4!

My baby's 10....double digits! It seems simply impossible!!! My life changed forever that special day he came bounding into the world. We were so young...22, and just more excited than describable. The pregnancy was a surprise and his birth was unusual. He was breech. He was head down at my 39 week check and flipped in the last week! I was sent to the hospital and 2 doctors climbed on top of my belly and manually tried (unsuccessfully) to turn him. PAIN. As a result, his heart rate dropped and my blood pressure skyrocketed. They prepped me for an emergency c-section. Thankfully, levels returned to normal and the 'emergency' status was removed. A couple hours later, I on an operating table, and my husband in scrubs, proudly welcomed a son into the world. Colombo DiSalvatore IV.

Since then he has brought unmatchable joy, satisfaction, and fulfillment. It's amazing to watch him grow and learn. He is caring and responsible and a leader among his peers. He constantly watches out for his younger siblings. We could be biased, but we think he's just about the smartest, kindest, most handsome 10 year old we know.

On his 'real' birthday, he chose to have burritos for dinner and a chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting.
Thinking of a wish...
Looking at his birthday book...all pictures and journaling over the last year.

For his party, he had 6 friends come and spend the night. They played air hockey, foosball, nerf gun war, and a lot of general boy stuff...joke telling, etc. It went very well. My only involvement was feeding them and a feeble attempt (or 5) to convince them to go to sleep. They slept from approximately 3am to 7:30am!

21 Weeks

More than 1/2 way there!!! I feel great! I have to be creative with my wardrobe. My clothes are quickly becoming too small and/or indecent and I'm not ready to plunge into the maternity box just yet. We are so thrilled. The kids are sweet about rubbing and kissing my growing belly and my husband thinks it's sexy. I LOVE being pregnant!

Happy Birthday, C3!

My greatest gift from God celebrated his birthday ...turning 32. We had a nice day together as a family. It started with omlettes for breakfast. Then in the afternoon we had C4's hockey game. After that we went to one of our favorites for dinner, The Outback.
Then it was back home for chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting (his request) and cards.

The celebration continues next week. His gift from me was tickets to "Wicked" and a day in the City with good friends.

Pond Hockey

Colombo in his old (very old) jersey

C4 and his buddy, Kevin

Nathanael is vertical!

The guys got invited out for a friendly little game of ice hockey. Conditions at the lake were perfect, as if a zamboni had been there. It was the first time this year that Nathanael was on skates. We 'tried' it last year and he didn't do so well. This time was much better, although he got cold quickly. They all had fun, but were wiped after...nothin' a little hot chocolate didn't cure.

Parenting is Tough

While young kids, like preschoolers and toddlers, can be physically exhausting to parent at times, I think as they get older it begins to transition into mental fatigue. When they're small, it's constantly saying 'no', cleaning up messes, baths, laundry, getting pee out of the couch, saying 'no', up in the middle of the night, disciplining, etc. The list goes on and on just as the work does.

Now that C4 is on the cusp of 10 and Madison is 7, the challenges are all new to me. I felt like when they were little it was black and white. Disobedience=discipline. You hit your sister, you get spanked. You tell mommy 'no', you get spanked. Well now I feel like there are so many gray areas and it's mentally exhausting. Not just because there are issues to deal with, but because we don't want to screw them up!

There are countless examples, but here's one. First the background. C4's in his 3rd year of hockey. Since season #1, while other kids' parents carried in their equipment, C4 has lugged his over his shoulder. While other parents have dressed their kids, C4 has dressed himself. My husband wanted him to be responsible for his stuff and not rely on us.

Yesterday when we arrived at his game (which was 45 minutes from home), C4 came around to my side of the van with tears in his eyes and said, "I forgot my stick." He told me because he knew his father wouldn't be happy. After a quick second of "What do you mean you forgot your stick. It was right on top of your bag. You knew you had a game, blah, blah, blah.", we moved on to solution thinking.

So in this gray area, do you
A) Teach the kid a lesson. Make him watch his team play and teach him to be responsible for his stuff, therein punishing the whole team.
B) Totally 'fix' it for him. Go to the pro-shop (thankfully they had one) and buy him a new $100 stick, irritated by the whole situation. And add a lecture on the way home.
C) Buy him a new $100 stick and make him pay you back over the next 6 months.
D) Show him mercy. Remember that you are not perfect. In fact, you forget things all the time. Buy him a stick without resenting it. After all, he is only 9.

What would you do? What did we do??? I stayed in the car with sleeping Trevor. My husband who was somewhere between option C and D, was looking at the sticks in the pro shop when C4 came in and told him his buddy had an extra he could use (a lefty!). So, in the end, C4 solved the problem on his own, which really was the best solution and we kept our money.

But these challenges are more and more frequent. There's a fine line between showing mercy and totally coddling your kid. If we bought him a stick, is he going to be a spoiled brat, gain a sense of entitlement, or end up on welfare as an adult?

It's a thankless, tiring job, just like when they're 3, but still totally worth it.

C4 is number 15, black jersey. At the end of the clip, you'll see he gets hit from behind AFTER the whistle...not cool. But we won, 3-1.

My Sweet Maddy-Girl

Baby Madison 2002
1st birthday

Sweetness part 1:
Yesterday I went into Promiseland (children's church) to retrieve C4 and Madison after service. It's always a bit chaotic. After a few moments of waiting, I sent C4 to go find Maddy. He came back and said "she's praying at the altar." In the midst of 100 kids being dismissed, playing Foosball, running around screaming, my eyes shifted toward the altar as I saw her, alone, rising and coming to greet me.

Upon arriving at home, I asked her what she was praying for. She said some kids had 'annoyed' her through service and she just started feeling a heaviness for them because there are so many people who are hurt and don't have Jesus. She felt like taking it to the altar and praying that kids who need Jesus would turn to Him.

Sweetness part 2: (regarding Christmas)
Last night there was a note laying on my pillow when I went to bed.
"Dear Mom, Thank you so much for giving the most best gift to me and that gift was L.O.V.E.!!! Love, Maddy"

Christmas with the Maine Gang

It's a 6 hour drive to Maine, but always totally worth the visit. This year our Christmas visit was quick- 22 hours and then back in the van!

We had a New Year's party at Brenda's on Friday night. The kids danced their little bums off along with Nana.

Nathanael danced his shirt off and almost his pants!

Saturday morning started with a visit with Grandpa.

C4 and Gabby say, "Good morning."

Then onto Nana's for 'Christmas'. She's the 'real' Santa...shhh!

Colombo's aunt, MaryJo

Then we made it over to Mimi's to exchange with her.

Short and sweet but a great trip!!!

Happy New Year

We spent New Year's Eve with good friends from church. Actually there were about 12 families from church there, tons of fun, games, and way too much food! We missed the ball dropping because Madison ended up not feeling well, but we still had fun.
On New Year's Day, we were invited over to other good friends for a delicious dinner! Steak, salad, crazy appetizers, and even dessert! Laurie and I had made plates for all the kids for Christmas, but since they were not delivered in time, we thought it would be fun for them all to open them together.
