Week 12

Week 12 seems like a long time ago.  It's been a very busy couple of weeks with Passion dress rehearsals and now part way through performances, but I'm plugging away, trying to keep up with the blog, too.

Week 12 I played the part of the single mom while Colombo was in Vegas / Seattle.  It was a great week!!!  Sort of enough of a change of pace to mix things up a bit.  Though I was on my own for three rehearsals and all the running around, it went really smoothly.  Thankfully the kids' activities have hit a post-hockey season lull.  I got some extra good time with the kiddos and a few late nights all by myself! :)

Monday, Mar. 16th
Sorry to leave you hanging!  I know you all have lost sleep wondering how the dog story turned out.  Well, she's still here!  And she's great!  She's affectionate, loves the kids' attention (even Renna's headlock hugs), and is very playful.  She is 90% house trained.  We've had a couple accidents so she still doesn't have free range of the house, but I think some of that is just me learning her cues to go out.  She also managed to destroy one pair of Renna's boots that were left next to the dog bed overnight.  So, she's not perfect, but we LOVE her.

Naming her was a process.  I let the kids each try a name for a day.  C4 didn't care to contribute, but he did insist that we should have gotten a monkey instead of a dog, so day one we called her Monkey.  Day two was Oakley- Nathanael's pick- which I thought was cute.  Renna picked LaLa, Madison picked Maizy, Trevor picked Brittany, and Rocco picked Piper.  After all that...a week later we landed on Maizy-LaLa, Maizy for short.  She's been around for two weeks now and the kids still ask if we're keeping her forever!!!  Ha!

Tuesday, Mar. 17th
It was 50 degrees, so we set out for a walk / bike ride.

St. Patrick's Day crock-pot experiment.  It came out really good!
Colombo and one of our coaches were both in Vegas for separate events, but knowing that ahead of time, they planned to workout together at the Crossfit out there.
Our little adoption picture hit Facebook land.
Wednesday, Mar. 18th
Tori sent me this picture she'd found in her IG archives.  How cute!!!!!

Renna's big debut: I let her rehearse on stage with Maddy for a scene.  (Usually she just stays home with Daddy.)
Click here to see her in the kids' scene.  Her first time ever practicing it.  Then after, she helped Brent and I do notes, mimicking my every move, even repeating names that I said.
Thursday, Mar. 19th

Watch her 'fix' the girl behind her :)

I'm still not used to this!
C4 had his Sophomore Ring Ceremony.  He didn't purchase a ring but still had to submit a piece of jewelry to be blessed, so he used his chain he'd gotten at his Passport 2 Purity.  It was a lovely ceremony, including music by the orchestra, and mercifully it was short.

How to occupy a three year old.  Phone on selfie mode + lip gloss.
Cookies and punch.

Friday, Mar. 21st
*Side note:  Soon enough, I will discontinue boring you with dumb dog sagas.  I won't be one of those people.* We let Asher out for a mid-day pee break.  Our last two recent dogs did not like Asher.  He can be a bit much.  No, he can be a lot much.  In fact, every dog he has ever been around hates him.  True story.  Because we watch him often, I was really hoping that Maizy would find something endearing about him.  I hatched a three step plan to making them friends.  Step one was to let them meet briefly in the cul-de-sac, neutral territory, both leashed, and just go for a walk.  Step two was to meet in the cul-de-sac on leashes and let them sniff and play possibly.  Step three...lose the leashes and may the better dog win if my plan failed.  But somehow, Maizy has room in her heart for the brown one and Bob and Jules' 'bad parents' guilt has eased.
First day of Spring.  It snowed, but that didn't stop us from getting our annual free Rita's!

Friday chores :)
The family split for the weekend.  Nathanael had a hockey tournament in New Hampshire.  Madison had a competition in Danbury.  I stayed with Madison and C4.  Daddy took the rest to NH.  I won't lie- there was a bit of happy dancing happening Friday afternoon.  I felt like I was on vacation to just have the oldest two!

Colombo settled into their hotel and texted me, "Rocco says, 'This is my first time sleeping on a bed.'"  Can you imagine?  The kid is nearly six years old and he'd never gotten a bed in a hotel.  His 'spot' is usually under the desk.
Saturday, Mar. 21st
Competition #2 of the season, and that deserves it's own post.
I took this girl out to dinner to talk through her feelings.  It's amazing how teenagers will open up if you feed them.  There's also something very special about dining out and breaking bread together.  This night it was more nourishing to the soul than the body.
Sunday, Mar. 22nd
No picture.  Hard to believe, but it was a busy day.  Church, full run-through of the show.  In lieu of a picture of my own, here is sweet Mr. Bennet, sporting his new half sleeves.  I love this guy and I love his Mama.  I'm thankful for the frequent mid-week texts we get with pictures and stories of Mr. B.  They make me smile.  Look at this face!!!!  This one in particular got me!

Week 11

Monday, Mar. 9th
I met up with Lisa for her doctor appointment and lunch together.  She had Aiden, so I took Rocco.  The boys rode with me to lunch.
Pop threw out a last minute invitation for tapping trees.  Sometimes, the last minute deals work the best, and don't you know, everyone was able to go.  Pop had lots of "help".

Sledding is really, really fun when it's 50 degrees.
Lisa's shots (It's also more fun to stand outside and take pictures when it's 50!)

Pop and Kiki insisted on making blueberry and chocolate chip pancakes with...homemade maple syrup, of course!

Apparently it was also National Women's Day and I loved this.  I love the little whip in the girls' hand.
Tuesday, Mar. 10th
Rinky Dink had her 3-year well visit.  (29 lbs, 38 in)
And Dr. Bush had new shoes, which is only notable if you know Dr. Bush.
He's been our fave for more than 16 years now.  LOVE him!
Installment II in the Dog Trilogy:
After our huge disappointment with Josie, I had resigned myself to putting the whole thing on hold until after Passion.  The 'dog people' suggested we get a puppy that could grow up in our crazy household, hopefully tolerating a toddler's "love" better than an older dog.  I wasn't thrilled about the destruction, expense, and work of a puppy (though they are irresistible!!!) but thought perhaps the 'dog people' were right and knew it'd have to wait until after Passion.

But.  But I got a text on Monday that the dog lady had a great fit for our family; a medium-sized, spaniel mix, sweet, lovable girl.  Ten months old- old enough that she was housebroken and knew basic commands, but still young enough for us to leave our imprint.  So Tuesday morning I drove to the shelter to grab her.

She came with the name Fiona, which we changed to Ginger, at least to try.  To be continued...

Rehearsal...

Wednesday, Mar. 11th
2nd Annual Girls' Day in NYC.  Juliet was here from Texas for spring break and her dad was kind enough to let us have a day.

Believe it or not, we pulled together a very last minute private with Maddy's contemporary choreographer.  We were up on the 12th floor in a very small studio.  Next door we could hear the plunking of piano keys.  Next-next door we could here some dude belting opera.  The waiting area was full of actors waiting to audition.  So New York.  The dream, I guess, for so many.
Then we caught the matinee of Aladdin which was just outstanding!  Typical Disney and completely over-the-top, but so entertaining and sensational!

Afterwards, the girls requested Macy's.  I was happy to sit in Starbucks and people watch while they window shopped.
I think Juliet's dress is totally fab!
Only in New York:
Brent and Aria happened to be there the same day (which we knew a week prior) to see Matilda, so we hooked up for the twenty minute walk back to Times Square.
We said goodbye and peeled off to do dinner at the Olive Garden (girls' choice), where we got a terrific corner booth with a window overlooking Times Square.  The girls giggled and laughed and watched dumb videos.  I'm telling you- two sweeter girls you will not find.  I felt so privileged to hang with them for the day.

Thursday, Mar. 12th
Day 3 with Ginger.  Everyone thought she was really cute, but she was a Nervous Nelly.  I'm not sure if she'd been abused in her past, but she didn't seem to be settling in or liking us and my patience was growing thin with the submissive peeing.  Actually, she wasn't really housebroken at all :(
Oh, this is DEFINITELY one of my kids.  It's been threatened numerous time, just never acted on.
Friday, Mar. 13th
Hauling the snow to other places, I guess.
Sleeping.
Dad and Christina called and offered to take one or all to Costco.  Yes, please!!!  Nathanael had done the stomach thing the day before and still wasn't feeling 100%, so he stayed back with me.  We got some good QT together.  At Apple, I dropped off my two laptops for data migration (don't I sound so smart?) and he proudly purchased the new iPod he's been saving for :)
Knowing the shelter was having another adoption event at PetSmart, I texted the dog lady and asked if I should bring Fiona / Ginger.  I don't know how to explain it, but she just wasn't clicking with us.  And I was tired of cleaning of poop and pee.  If I was going to housebreak a dog, it was going to be for a cute, little puppy of my choosing!  So, we dropped her off with the caveat that if she didn't get adopted that night, we'd take her back to foster until the next event.  But she was adopted into a family, so goodbye dog #2.
Saturday, Mar. 14th
Busy day- CORE breakfast, rehearsal, dance, church...

New birthday dress from MaryJo...dressed and ready for church!
Terrible picture, but this is sweet Sister Ann who just loves kids and has poured far more than I'll ever even know into my guys.  She's a very special woman with a fierce passion for Jesus and ministry.  I loved that she stopped in the hall just to laugh with us and encourage the kids.
Emily had gone to service with us and then come back to the house.
After church, we went out on a date.  We went to Market Grill and discovered their totally hip outdoor bar / dining space had been enclosed for the winter.  The fire was going, so we pulled right up and ate there.  It was totally romantic, cozy and delightful, and the food did not disappoint.
Madison babysat and a few friends came to help.  I love that my kids make such honorable friendships; it makes saying 'yes' really easy.  C4 had Isaac over and Tori and Emily hung out with Maddy.  When we returned, C4 announced, "The children are sleeping.  None have perished."  All's well that ends well.
Sunday, Mar. 14th
I took Colombo to the airport bright and early for his annual Vegas trip.  Isaac had spent the night so he was lucky enough to join me and the six kids on our excursion back to...wait for it...PetSmart!  I know.  I'm insane.  Just insane.  Yet another adoption event and my dog lady encouraged me to come back to check out a couple she had in mind.

Installment III of the Dog Trilogy:  We met 'Kayla' and were very immediately drawn to her.  She's a Corgi mix and super sweet, age 1-2 yrs (which is what I had FIRST wanted, even before Josie), and she's house-broken.  She's about 35 pounds, which is a great size- not a yappy, little ankle biter, but not so big that she's taking out Renna at every turn.  To be continued...  Will she stay?  Will she go?  Does she bite anyone?  Has Amy totally lost it?  All these questions and more will be answered when you tune in next week!
After rehearsal, I took the kids to Friendly's with coupons Mrs. Essick had blessed us with.  I'm sorry, but that place is unbelievable.  We only go about once every year or two and it's always the same- horrible service, mistakes, and a long wait for mediocre food.  I just don't get how it's consistently that bad.  At every location.  Is is corporate strategy?  It's really mind boggling.  Our waiter did not even get 15%, sadly, and I can't remember the last time I tipped less than 18%.
After we got home is when it came out that Trevor had walked out of the restaurant with a trophy.  Trophy?  What?  Yeah, apparently he asked Madison if he could bring home his chicken basket thing.  She gave him a sarcastic Sure (thinking he could comprehend the sarcasm and understand it was a no) and that was all he needed.  Needless to say, I need to return this to Friendly's.
